Established as a joint initiative by the Diocese of Forlì-Bertinoro, the Municipality of Bertinoro and the University Residential Centre, the Museum was opened on 10 June 2005.

It was conceived by Forlì Senator Leonardo Melandri, who brought together leading figures (theologists, architects and artists) of national and international fame from the three monotheistic faiths to create it. The Museum is thus the outcome of their joint endeavours and is constructed around a number of themed visitor paths, which also include major works of art.

The main doorway, designed by artist Mario Di Cicco, is the work of a group of artists (potters, wood carvers, sculptors).

The Museum covers the three great monotheist religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam), which have profoundly shaped the history, culture and identify of the peoples of the Mediterranean and thus of the entire world.
