The “pieve” church was built by the Lombards in the 8th Century. The style of the capitals, the work of local stonemasons, is very similar to stonework of the same period at Bobbio and Cividale del Friuli.

The three-naved church has been restored a number of times, most famously in 1897 with the support of the poet Giosuè Carducci, who marked the occasion by writing the Ode alla Chiesa di Polenta, recalling the fact that Dante prayed in this church during his exile.

The churchyard, with the crests of the towns which once took part in the traditional Meeting in honour of Carducci, is also of interest.
