In 2013, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the death of Aldo Spallicci—an eminent pediatrician, poet in the Romagnol dialect, and Senator of the Republic, renowned for passionately promoting the identity and popular traditions of Romagna—a monument dedicated to him was inaugurated in Santa Maria Nuova.

The work, created by the sculptor Sandro Pagliuchi, was placed in Spallicci’s birthplace to honor the memory of one of the most important Romagnol intellectuals of the twentieth century.

Spallicci (1886–1973) distinguished himself not only through his medical career, but also through his cultural commitment: he founded important journals devoted to local culture, helped elevate the Romagnol dialect to a literary language, and took an active role in post-war political life, first as a member of the Constituent Assembly and later as a senator.
