Romagna Cagnina DOC is a traditional wine best enjoyed fresh from the harvest. It is produced mainly from Terrano grapes, a variety locally known as de grasp ros because the stalk tends to turn red in color.
The origins of this wine date back to the Byzantine period, when these vines are believed to have arrived from Istria together with the limestone used for the construction of churches, baptisteries, and monuments in the Ravenna area. Its name is thought to derive from the slightly sharp character of this ancient grape, said to “bite” the palate.
The production regulations for Romagna Cagnina DOC require a minimum composition of 85% Terrano grapes. The remaining 15% may consist of other red grape varieties authorized for cultivation in Emilia-Romagna.
Cagnina has a violet-red color, with a vinous and distinctive bouquet. On the palate it is sweet and full-bodied, slightly tannic, with a lively acidic note. It pairs wonderfully with roasted chestnuts, cheeses, as well as tarts and freshly baked ring cakes, and is especially appreciated by lovers of fine Romagnol wine.
